Memories from John Benbow,
Funniest: the year 2 baby bear cubs came out of hibernation early and were tearing the safety padding off of one of the towers on the Garbanzo Chair. All the international kids wanted to get closer to see them and we had to get patrol to close off the run under the chair so the kids did not get too close and in harms way.
Most impressive; In the 16 years of being directly involved in Whistler Cup loosing only one race to mother nature.
Disappointing: obviously the one race we were unable to pull off. The Thursday night before the Super G we received 60cm of snow.
When I asked for cat support from WB the response was incredible…20 minutes later there were 4 groomers there to do what we could to get the track back. Unfortunately it was to much and the track was to soft and would not have been safe for the athletes to race.
Proudest: When Kendall Benbow raced to a second place in the Super G and a 4th in the G.S. and was named the top Canadian female taking home the Nancy Green Trophy in 2002. That cost me a bunch on the deck of the GLC.
